Not necessary per se, but I find I download mods or other files in OS X then want to transfer them to my win partition rather than rebooting or even launching via vmware all the time.

Having 3 SSDs from 256 MB to 1 GB for years now - they are just superb, as for speed and reliability.
My backupdisks (rotating ones) are raided - as i loose one per year pretty sure...

Is it true that when SSDs fail, they fail as READ ONLY, just can't write to them anymore? Heard that somewhere once..

Brand names please. I am very happy with my Intel 320 right now, but if it expires I'll be sure to let you know.

Any particular type I should look for? I'm not too hot on anything with Sandforce in it; this was a Corsair F120 with SF-1200 series controller. Failed sleeps can cause them to lock up in panic/engineering mode with RMA being the only solution, apparently. Looks like Indilinx drives have jumpers to reset, but won't in future. That would be very handy about now. This'll learn me for trying to put the comp to sleep as well scratch

Not something I bother with often, either.

In trying to install Boot Camp its telling me I can't even partition the disk because its not Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Its telling me I have to back up the entire disk and reformat with Disk Utility... affraid

Does the internal HD really come from Apple in a format that can't be Boot Camped without reformatting the dang thing?? Rolling Eyes

Should be able to enable journaling in Disk Utility...

Hmmm, Disk Utility says it already is Extended (Journaled). Its a 1Tb internal with 675Gb available, so I'm not sure what the real problem Boot Camp Assistant is having. I guess I'll try repairing Disk permissions... Question

You need a GUID partition map. Probably yours is an Apple partition map and this is the source of the problem. I think you can get this information from DU. This is not about the particular flavour of your partition but about the scheme used to slice the disk into multiple partitions.

Well, it looks like there was an error in the volume catalog. Did disk repair and then repaired permissions and this time partitioning worked fine. Then I loaded XP, but when I did the step to install the Boot Camp drivers I got a blue screen of death with a fatal error. I removed the partition (with Boot Camp assistant) and started again from scratch, recreating the partition, loading XP and then adding the Boot Camp Drivers.

Same story 2nd time thru, seems to be loading stuff up, but it gets part way through and then I start hearing sounds like alerts, and it crashes to a blue screen with fatal error. Second time it seems to reboot into Windows and I get to a standard looking green hill with blue sky, usual Windows XP desktop, a dialog says WIndows crashed with a fatal error and the pointer does not respond to mouse movements.

I believe I may be done trying unless anyone has an idea what might be going wrong... geek

If you are using Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper you can make a new clone, and then do a restore from the clone. I did this last year on my iMac and it is supposed to put everything back in in the proper order. I was able to partition after that.

Your mileage may vary.

Edit: Looks like we posted about the same time arrgh. I'll leave this solution up in case others have the issue too.

Don't give up yet Pax. I think I had blue screen issue too, but can't remember off the top of my head how to fix it. It's something silly, and can be dealt with. Oh Dandy!

There are some graphical limitations (i.e. no shadows for you!), but otherwise it can work well, depending on your system specs.

For the BSOD, ensure you have the latest firmware and Boot Camp driver versions.
I gather you fixed your disk while booted to OS X install CD? And checked again for errors after the initial repair?

Obligatory Q's:
What size and format is the partition?
Have you reformatted the partition during XP install? (BC-formatted FAT may cause problems)
Which XP version are you installing? (BC requires SP2 or later - you can create a "slipstreamed" CD if it's an earlier version)

With Apple outperforming the PC sector, market share on the rise, a stock price that's perennially heading up, and amazing growth for the last 20 quarters, I feel secure enough in my Apple fanboi-ism that my ego can take some Windows from time to time. And rFactor is MUCH more of a challenge.

81 GB partition, NTFS, XP SP2, I erased the partition using BCA and then created it all over again, same size. Yes, I fixed the disk by booting from the OS X DVD. Don't know what BSOD is though...? XP seems to install fine, its the next step of getting the Boot camp drivers to load that's tripping me up. I.'m using the 10.6 DVD that came with my 2010 iMac, should I be doing it with something else?

If fusion works without shadows I might get the free version 4 30-day trial just to check it out.

BSOD=BlueScreenofDeath... I may have jumped the gun assuming that one.

I think I may have had this problem as well at some point. You can install the drivers individually from the disc. Not planning to use the iSight in Windows? Don't bother with it. Your bare essentials are the Intel Chipset, appropriate graphics, network, and audio. All others are for convenience, though you might try the keyboard driver for the extra buttons.
Installing Startup Disk is convenient as well, but could much with your system. You can always leave your Startup disk as your Mac volume and boot windows with the option key each time, which eleminates some confusion, frankly.

You know, I have boot camp with XP from back when Tiger was the thing.. And as I've upgraded thru Leopard & Snow Leopard, the BC drivers have updated the XP installation right along. But, supposedly with Snow Leopard, while XP would function fine, installing it could be problematic on some configurations. If you're like me, you probably have a Leopard DVD laying around, maybe install it on a separate drive & use it to install boot camp drivers, THEN do the Snow Leopard BC drivers. If I ever have to re-do boot camp, I'll probably just end up getting Windows Se7en...

edit - the hard drive on that machine is down to 22% free; I'm running defrag on it now.

edit - OK, done, the server is running again; Dandy, can we get rid of some of the mod installers to free up more space on the drive? I know the Enduracer one is really big...
