I'll take care of it tomorrow. Actually, there's another partition on the drive; I'll format it and dump them on there, in case we ever need them again.DANDY wrote:Sure thing, they're only there for convenience and may never be touched again.Kenners wrote:Dandy, can we get rid of some of the mod installers to free up more space on the drive? Re: rFactor - how-to
It sounds like you're reasonably sure my BSOD is basically because I'm dealing with an XP vs Snow Leopard issue? If you're confident that's what I'm hitting, I might be willing to shell out some more greenbacks for Win7, I can get a copy from work for about $25.Kenners wrote:If I ever have to re-do boot camp, I'll probably just end up getting Windows Se7en...
K
If Fusion 4 works with XP I might give that a whirl as well, they have probably got those kind of bugs worked out already.

I can try installing win7 under bootcamp here... but I have lion and bootcamp 4 so I dunno if it is different.

Re: rFactor - how-to
I'd like to say I'm sure, but I can say I did a lot of troubleshooting when XP wasn't working right when I got my new Mac Pro, and at the time, from Apple support docs and forum postings, I was pretty sure I wasn't going to get XP reinstalled via Boot Camp... If you can get a copy of 7 for $25, might just be easier...Pax-raider wrote:It sounds like you're reasonably sure my BSOD is basically because I'm dealing with an XP vs Snow Leopard issue? Re: rFactor - how-to
I wonder; if you can install XP and get booted into it, before trying to install the boot camp drivers, if you might get this to install first, then try the Boot Camp 3 drivers..?Pax-raider wrote:Well, it looks like there was an error in the volume catalog. Did disk repair and then repaired permissions and this time partitioning worked fine. Then I loaded XP, but when I did the step to install the Boot Camp drivers I got a blue screen of death with a fatal error. I removed the partition (with Boot Camp assistant) and started again from scratch, recreating the partition, loading XP and then adding the Boot Camp Drivers.
Same story 2nd time thru, seems to be loading stuff up, but it gets part way through and then I start hearing sounds like alerts, and it crashes to a blue screen with fatal error. Second time it seems to reboot into Windows and I get to a standard looking green hill with blue sky, usual Windows XP desktop, a dialog says WIndows crashed with a fatal error and the pointer does not respond to mouse movements.
I believe I may be done trying unless anyone has an idea what might be going wrong...

Installed vmware tools... Gone through all the prefs? There are a few things to tweak in there, the least of which is enabling 3D mode. Im still running version 3 though, so there could be differences.Pax-raider wrote:So I installed Fusion 4, loaded up XP, installed rFactor and its running at less than 1 fps. Any ideas?
Re: rFactor - how-to
Before I start troubleshooting it would be useful if you can guestimate what fps I should be seeing if things are working properly. I'm running a standard config 2010 iMac (3.2 Ghz i3, 4GB ram with an ATI Radeon HD 5670 GPU, 512MB vram). I have no idea whether to expect running rFactor in a virtual machine to get to the same smoothness in gameplay as I see in RL (75 fps most of the time)...?

I'd guesstimate 30fps at the very least, at full settings on most tracks.Pax-raider wrote:Before I start troubleshooting it would be useful if you can guestimate what fps I should be seeing if things are working properly. Re: rFactor - how-to
I turned down all the graphics to minimum and its playable, although there's an occasional pause that can last over a second (ie: screen freezes, car is in the same position when I return). Problem is, now it looks like crap and doesn't encourage me to play. This is also just playing on my own, so I'm doubtful whether multiplayer would be very worthwhile.
What is there in the VMware tools that could help?
Would there be a better experience via Boot Camp?

Re: rFactor - how-to
Alf and Pax,
I never attempted to run rFactor with a virtual package. Always used bootcamp. I have a first generation macbook pro (dual core 1.83) not even core duo with to gigs of ram.
fFactor runs flawlessly with this, and that, with graphics and sound on pretty high settings.

Boot Camp will always deliver the best experience.Pax-raider wrote:What is there in the VMware tools that could help?

The VMWare Tools package should act as the virtual chipset (and other) drivers, bringing the maximum performace, iirc. A basic OS install without proper drivers will always perform badly. Macs simply have these drivers built in due to their "known hardware platform".
You'll also need to check performance settings like allocated RAM and 3D support enabled. If it has very little, it will perform poorly. Should run fine on 2GB.
Re: rFactor - how-to
Thanks D. VMWare tools appears to be loaded already. Being a PC noob I don't know where those performance settings are accessible...
Makes sense that booting into Windows would be cleaner/faster, I think I'll have to get Win 7 before tackling that again.

7 is a good move at that price, installation should be much simpler and more compatible.

NicE MovE 20FingerS
thanks for the tournament and your work.
All of us discussing here read the forums i guess.
This here is nothing personal, nothing against you, nothing against anything basically.
Its a discussion on running rFactor for some of us.
Redline won't last forever, rFactor 2 is coming, Redline 2 not.
as long as there is activity on redline, good for all involved.
same applies to rFactor.
go on with your work, don't hate me or us for discussing something you may not like.
all the best as usual my friend,

Re: rFactor - how-to
no problem man, I'm gonna switch too pretty soon...if I have still time to play...
I was just kidding you!
And it would be a pleasure to see you all. I wrote here just because it seems pretty active...nothing against rFactor (looking awesome! and that Alberto Fontana makes good videos too) nor you guys enjoying it!
Just a bit of old banter...

p.s. I should be flattered that every tournament following the demise of the RLTCC has used my website pages to build upon.

That has become a BRAND for nice tournaments, a certification of fun! really cool and still stylish! I asked Alph if we could copy and paste from the gt4 page, so back to the main source, thanks buddy!See Flat wrote:

Re: rFactor - how-to
Do I care which version of Win7 I get, 32-bit or 64-bit? It looks like they're the same price for me, and according to Apple my 2010 iMac can run the 64-bit version, so it seems like I should get the 64 unless you guys know of a gotcha that comes into play.

Re: rFactor - how-to
God will burn me...or the devil...but yesterday I managed to play with it! Crossover games+Internet explorer (in 1 bottle), rFactor in another bottle.
All fine, it looks shiny and smooth...BUT, where do I find you and how? And if I buy crossover and rFactor, will I be able to add plugins, or mods(what am I talking? mods???). I won't buy anything until I see one of you online and I can play with
