I've been cheating on you
...or, my $25 worth
As I posted once, I installed Winbloz as a dedicated console for the excellent game rfactor. After playing about a month, I can safely say it's taken RL's place as my #1 sim. No worries, though, my RL folder isn't going anywhere. I'll still be playing, just somewhat less. I am, however, halting my development activities, and I'm not particularly interested in maintaining the plugs, so if anyone feels so inclined as to act as caretaker for one, some, or all, please contact me.
If anyone is interested in getting into a mind-bogglingly more advanced sim, let me know and I'll steer you in the right direction. We've been spoiled by the genius of LOL and the RLPAU, as these things aren't nearly as well put together over there. Likewise if you already play, I'd love to run with RLers.
My wish is to have the RL community join me over there to form a league, but I know that will never happen, and the reasons are many. For a lifelong car guy and sim addict like myself, it's worth some inconvenience.
I'd like to express my gratitude to all who have assisted and debated along the way. I enjoyed making this stuff, and learned a great deal, even if my results were far from professional.
It's time I got back to racing.

Re: I've been cheating on you
Thanks for putting this up Dandy, it's a fair point of discussion if for no other reason than where do all the ex Redliners go? Guys like Nosferatu, Seanjohn, NAS and a lot more. All hardcore guys, that probably did not just give up simming. Dandy is the first guy to come forward and explain why he's checking out.
It's also good that this topic is here, because sooner or later we will have to go somewhere to feed our racing Jones's.
There is no clear solution to our dilemma, what do we do when there is no Redline?
The advantage to Redline for me now is that it's Mac, plain and simple. And equally, it's the community, we all know that. But there's tons of other sim games out there that we can't run, and a couple that are really good, Rfactor being one of them.
I have to install windoze every year to do my taxes, and every year it's some new nightmare of not being able to partition without a clean install of the Mac OS, or a bootcamp screwup, or damn Windows won't install properly. So when D says he knows we can't all just go together into Rfactor, partly it's got to be because it takes a lot of effort to get there. Could buy a Windoze box, then coin becomes part of the equation. Redline wins hands down as $25 and you are up and racing in less than a minute.
Anyway it's always something. It will be nice to know though that we have friend over at Rfactor/TeamRedline and that maybe in future we can race again.
Could we inspire Giles to port Rfactor over to the Mac in his spare time? Maybe throw a few coins in his hat.

Now you made me being interested in rFactor. I know that some other Redliners play it as well.
I've got to say thank you for all your involvement in Redline. I (and many others) always viewed your cars as benchmarks in terms of performance and driving behaviour. I never felt that I achieved your realism, though.

Re: I've been cheating on you
I've had both rFactor and Live For Speed (better simulation, less content) on my PC for about two years now, and I love them as games, but Redline has a strange X factor. Maybe I'm biased from a good experience with games from Ambrosia Software ever since I was a kid. And I don't play multiplayer, so I haven't experienced any differences there.
Maybe the X factor has something to do with that Redline feels more hand-made. It's rough around the edges, but that doesn't matter as it's made with a sense of humor. That feeling is typical for Ambrosia Software and also for Freeverse. (Harry the Handsome Executive? Burning Monkey Solitaire?) And that sense of humor has also made it into the add-ons, which I think is great.

That's not going to happen, as rFactor isn't Free Software. Maybe a company like Aspyr has the resources to pay for licensing, development, and support, but it doesn't seem like ISI (the developer) cares anything about having their work being ported to another platform.Toad wrote:Could we inspire Giles to port Rfactor over to the Mac in his spare time? aaawww, what a pity, feel free to come back anytime. Same as RIC, you thought me al lot of RL with patience and care.
I stil can't install windhoos, not a technical problem but a bit of a moral problem , so i cant check rFactor.
See you around Dandy

Well, he's put his plugs up for grabs. Coming from Dandy, I'd say that is saying a lot. imo
Re: I've been cheating on you
As always, Tomte's sharp as a tack.
I was careful to say I'm not leaving, just done plugging. I'll probably still be on more than some people on this board. I'm still interested in the various projects afoot, and wholeheartedly encourage their continued development.

I mean Boot Camp, used only for this game, as I have no other use for it.See Flat wrote:Out of curiosity, dedicated box, or since you are saying installed Winbloz... do you mean Bootcamp?

Leo's Shoe Box
We've seen a few instances of people drifting away from the Redline community, or downright disappearing, or just giving up interest in certain projects. We've seen a few of these "adopt my project" subjects - sometimes the offer has been taken up, sometimes not. We've also seen instances of people picking up development of abandoned or vapourware projects at a much later date.
I've got a suggestion that would help in situations like this: Leo's Shoe Box (TM).
What if we developers, when we decide to stop developing our projects, bundle together the source files and upload an archive to LoL (or anywhere with a reasonable state of permanence) for others to take on? Sure, people can unplug existing plug-ins but that's no replacement for high-quality editable source files. Personally, I made up my mind a while ago that if ever I tire of Redline or any particular plug-in, it'll be made open-source for anyone who is interested.
Thoughts?

Feel the same. Heading for an ending.... or a great sequel. I'm betting on the latter.

Re: I've been cheating on you
good choice DANDY, I had a chance to play rFactor in past on a friend of mine piccì. Was also a game I compared Redline with, cause has better graphics, better multiplayer support, improved physics and is cheaper.
But has something in will never like. Windows OS. I don't think Aspyr/Feral/MacSoft will ever get involved in porting, cause rFactor is a sort of "community" project. Just like Racer.
We can hope about a Mac porting directly from the developers. Just think how could be fun to move out all our "stuffs" on that game...
But, is it possible?
For sure, I will not move to rFactor if i will not have "my" community

Indeed, Windoz is truly awful. Nothing more to add there. All I can do to make it feel homey is put the taskbar at the top, My Comp in the top right, Recycle Bin...you got it...bottom right.DonaemouS wrote:good choice DANDY, I had a chance to play rFactor in past on a friend of mine piccì. Our cars' basic models could be used, with some additional work to them, as there is a damage model, parts that fly off in crashes, multiple sounds, and the coding probably takes much longer. Many of our cars are already represented, and look stunning.
The game is already aging, but still has a huge user base, typically divided into leagues. We could try to petition ISI (the publisher) for a mac port, though the hope is very dim.
**Just saw some info regarding rFactor 2, coming relatively soon...

MBP 2.3 CoreDuo, 2G RAM, ATI X1600 (256MB) video....runs very well with some graphic option tweaks, even at 4X anistropic. I recommend a 30G partition, some of the mods (plugins) are enormous.
Re: I've been cheating on you
I wouldn't install Win -haha- dows just for a game. There are about 10% Mac users around - I don't believe the game will be ported.
Redline is realistic but simple - or simple but realistic. Realsim - Simplistic.
