Re: I've been cheating on you
I'm quite curious about the car .ini files. Can you post a car configuration file here? Also, what you mean about crash model? They model the body in separate meshes, or they model also the damaged meshes?DANDY wrote:The game is already aging, but still has a huge user base, typically divided into leagues. We could try to petition ISI (the publisher) for a mac port, though the hope is very dim.
**Just saw some info regarding rFactor 2, coming relatively soon...
About porting, try to get in contact with them, should be interesting to have a crossplatform for rFactor 2.

I'm running a 1st gen macbook, and it looks like i should be able to play this. Might go ahead and install xp this weekend and give it a whirl.......ill keep you posted.
Macbook pro dual 1.83 here. Graphics are as smooth, without me tweaking anything.
Re: I've been cheating on you
I'd say they damage separate damage meshes, some are better than others.DonaemouS wrote:

The configs are split into 35+ files, so, if interested, I'd suggest downloading one for inspection.

Probably the topmost reason I don't expect to see most RL racers on the other side. I fully understand how installing a M$ OS on a Mac is a horrifying prospect for some people.
Re: I've been cheating on you
Hope you are having fun over there!
The wife keeps XP in regular use for her warcrafting, so one day I might get round to trying it. I don't hold out much hope for my Mini being able to play it very well though!
The other decent alternative is Vdrift. Completley open source, OS X native, but doesn't yet have multiplayer. However they have just finished a major rewrite and are having a poll on what should be added next. Once it gets some online features I would expect it to show a huge rise in popularity.

Anyone try rFactor in Crossover?
When the Mac Pro arrives I'll be giving Left4Dead and Red Orchestra a whirl in Crossover.

Re: I've been cheating on you
This is CrossOver. Amazing what a 10 second Google search can do, eh?See Flat wrote:what is Crossover?
It's a commercialised version of WINE, the long-time Windows translation layer for Linux (remember folks, Wine Is Not an Emulator.) It will fool Windows games and application into running on foreign systems, by providing translation layers for all the services (DLLs, DirectX, DirectSound etc.) that they would expect to be present on a Windows box.

cool it on the sarcasm please. I was being social and did not feel like being a detective.djpimley wrote:This Amazing what a 10 second Google search can do, eh?See Flat wrote:what is Crossover?
Ok, so crossover... why? any layer of translation would surely affect performance. I could not get it to work with parallel. It works perfectly using bootcamp.
Re: I've been cheating on you
Just for you, babe.See Flat wrote:cool it on the sarcasm please.
The thing with CrossOver is, you run the game from the Finder and it runs in an OS X native window (or fullscreen.) When you're done playing, you quit back to the desktop, or you do what many of us do while waiting in the MP lobby: check your email, browse the web, arrange our desktop items to form rude words. The translation layer simply translates a DirectX call to an OpenGL call, a DirectSound call to a CoreAudio call. The overhead is actually very minimal because no emulation of complex environments is being done. Not every application or game works, due to oddities in the programming or (would you believe it?) buggy Microsoft OS behaviour.See Flat wrote:

Oh, I forgot: you also won't need to buy a copy of XP/Vista... you are buying these Windows installs, aren't y'all?

Re: I've been cheating on you
Did you actually try to buy a stand-alone copy of XP without a PC attached to it? I find it very difficult to find a full version which does not require a previous version for installation/upgrade.djpimley wrote:

I'm asking because I might need this for professional reasons (all dedicated software I need for work runs on Windows only). It should be cheaper for me to have a fully licensed version of XP/Vista/whaterever than to buy a laptop with it installed.

Hadn't heard of it, though I had heard of wine, which sounded cool yet scary....we'll see, as I'll ditch XP in a second if it works.NoNameBrand wrote:Anyone try rFactor in Crossover?
**UPDATE** the answer is probably not, certainly not off the original install of X-Over or X-Over Games. Need to try winetricks.

As for damage models, this vid will show you the extent of it. Not the very best, but good enough for me.

Re: I've been cheating on you
I have a legal copy of XP Home OEM on my MacBook. I could virtualize it, call MS, get it reactivated, then transfer to the Mac Pro as a virtual machine (breaking the EULA, but whatever). But, it's a non-starter for bootcamp (even if I can convince MS that my MacBook's motherboard broke and the replacement has two Xeons on it...), as XP Home only supports one CPU.
Re: I've been cheating on you
yeah, I remember that I found this as well. I should have clarified. As I cannot buy in the US Amazon store, I was searching in the UK store for a non-OEM, full version. Couldn't find it last time I searched (a year ago). I'm certainly not going to buy a French version....djpimley wrote:Wouldn't they do?

You can't? I've done it and had stuff delivered to the U.K. You're sure it doesn't work in France? In my experience, I can buy anything I want from the four corners of the planet and someone will deliver it to my doorstep for the right price. Re: I've been cheating on you
Hmm, I never tried that with products which are listed as "Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S."djpimley wrote:You can't? I just tried it and got this "*** We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order by changing its quantity to 0 and clicking the update button below. ( See geographical restrictions.) ***"
Of course, there are other stores than Amazon. Up to now my clients always provided a PC, so I didn't actually need to own Windows for work.
But enough of this threadjack.

When I bought my macbook pro, I bought and OEM version of XP professional at the same time. The Licensing for oem is that it must be sold at the same time as a computer.. not stating that it cannot be a mac. Three years ago when bootcamp surfaced. Dont know if they have reacted since then.

Rfactor in Crossover
I tried to install and run Rfactor with Crossover a week or so ago and Failed. It's not supported on Crossovers app page, but it did install it. Just would not open. That's not to say someone more clever than I couldn't get it to run. There are a bunch support files on Crossovers site to help with running unsupported stuff.
Someone mentioned it might run in Parallels, but very doubtful at anywhere near the speed needed. I'll give it a shot after I do my taxes in Parallels.

Well, I said.. it did NOT run in parallel's. No sense in jumping through hoops. It runs PERFECTLY in bootcamp. Im not saying more, cause to tell you the truth, I would find it inappropriate. I will say this... I enjoy being here because it's fun to race with you guys. I have not tried MP on rfactor, so I dont know. As far as a game goes... I think it pretty much does everything you guys have on all the wishlists I have read in the past two years.

A possible solution posted on WineHQ states the winetricks ie6 command works. No idea if it will do the trick with crossover, but should work in wine, with winetricks installed. I have stuttered conversational unix, but might have a go.
I gave the game a whirl in VMWare on minimum settings. It works, but not well.
Re: I've been cheating on you
Oh, I see: only the OEM version is available from Amazon.fr but at Amazon.co.uk the full version is available. Tomte, Amazon.co.uk won't ship to France either? If not, I could help you with that, as I am living in the U.K. Seems like Amazon.fr is happy to sell the OEM version without making you buy and ordinateur at the same time - although I haven't tried to go through the buying process.See Flat wrote:When I bought my macbook pro, I bought and OEM version of XP professional at the same time. Re: I've been cheating on you
I gave and giving a look at the files. Is more complex then Redline's .car, but the torque simulation, the suspensions infos, and the tyre model are just incredible. I was also looking at this video:DANDY wrote:Some are, some aren't.
Look how the car feels light, differently from our that feels heavy and heavy, but when they encounter a small jump on the road, fly as they was made with paper...
Re: I've been cheating on you
Ah, thanks. I saw the UK offer in the overview already, but thought it was used only. Should have checked it out.djpimley wrote:Oh, I see: only the OEM version is available from Amazon.fr but at Amazon.co.uk the full version is available. Thanks for your offer! I might get back to you when I really need it. Then again, I think I can buy software from the UK and have it delivered to France.
