The desktop also reveals a man that likes hard drives; three internal, one external!

Re: What's consuming your time today?
heh, well I'm a nerd in Macintosh setups. One if for System, one is for the Home Folder and the other one is for games. This allow the Mac Pro to access with three different SATA2 channels to data stored on the HDDs.Pax-raider wrote:The desktop also reveals a man that likes hard drives; three internal, one external!
Note: I'm almost, fast as djpimley dual processor Mac Pro Harpertown =p
The remote one is the LAN server.
Re: What's consuming your time today?
You did it, Donaemous, you made me SSD obsessive.
I just pulled the trigger on this combo:
Intel 320 Series 300GB
Pro Sled 2.5
Now, on to that kext hack for TRIM support...

Someone say disks?
Four disks, 2.6TB, thirteen volumes, most of 'em for backup. 'Scratch' is a 300MB/s RAID0 array for Potatoshop.

Nice!
I plan on replacing the silly Lightscribe burner that came in the lower DVD slot of this Mac Pro with one of those brackets that allows two drives to replace it. Pair of low-capacity SSDs in a RAID0 ought to do nicely. Use part for the boot/app disk and part for scratch.
Tempting to get a pair of X5355s (quad 2.66) off eBay to replace the 5150s, but I rarely saturate all four cores that I have now as it is. May get a 6800 series video card to replace the 3870 at some point.
I think the most likely case for this machine becoming 'obsolete' for me is when Apple eventually requires 64 bit EFI for an OS release (10.8). Off to the glue/Linux server factory then!

I'm glad to present you, my new Apple Macintosh family entry... Presenting the new.... emmh, the Macintosh LC III... 10MB/40MB FDD, Ethernet, Extended Keyboard and Mouse.
I still missing a Display, but I will find one...
EDIT: Working in progress

Re: What's consuming your time today?
The SSD arrived over a week ago but the 2.5" drive sled is still not here so I decided to install the SSD into the 3.5" drive sled by making a cat's cradle from boot lace... and it's working beautifully.
This thing is definitely fast but it's the lack of noise that is the most striking thing right now. My Mac is almost silent.

Just an idea...
Just an idea I put together with Gimp - an alternative, possibly aftermarket and obviously aimed at making the car appear more dynamic front bumper design for the current Skoda Octavia RS.

Val, when does the Kickstarter project launch?
Now that my Mac Pro is supercharged, it's time to look at the netbook. My crumby slow Aspire is getting iPad envy.

80 MB/s with 1 millisecond latency and Ubuntu is usable!

I guess now you removed all those bits of chocolate on the left there, we know why it was "crumby slow".

Re: What's consuming your time today?
heh, the hacking fans are growning... 80MBs? Which HD are u using?
BTW: Crucial SSD at 1,35 Euros GB

Re: What's consuming your time today?
No HDD. The entire OS is running off that 8 GB SanDisk Compact Flash card (black and red) which I put in there on a little converter board.DonaemouS wrote:80MBs? Which HD are u using?
The Crucial SSD gets a good review here.
Pax, I blame Ubuntu - the Ubuntu startup screen is a Cadbury's shade of purple, which likely explains the chocolate shavings that have been fouling up my netbook.

Just banging on the door
Hello to anyone and everyone.
Just thought I'd peek in and see if this was still al working. Was actually surprised to see that legacy was still up. Seems it's cause of a few.
Those were certainly grand times when we met practically every night for some sin fun.
I've not raced in over a year, and have just started getting back into Rfactor (running windows in bootcamp)
It's wonderful simming, even if it's 4 years old.
Hope you are all well and that your lives are joyous.
Cheers to all!
SF

Re: What's consuming your time today?
Never far!
SF kickstarted my efforts - I've just set up a team at Race2Play.com if anyone cares to join.
Huge amount of clean, stewarded racing. Free, with paid option.
NOTE: rFactor2 *may* be just around the corner.
link: Propeller Race Works
Practicing with Boot Camp loaded via VMWARE (w/shadows off!), rebooting to race.
Recently went to an SSD, so reboot pain is mostly gone.
Glad to see RL is still alive, I'd join but changed to a wheel that doesn't work with it, and my lame KB skills evaporated long ago!

Hi Kenners,
Dandy told me that there were a few of the old gang that gave Rfactor a try. Would be fun to see some known faces on there.
If any of you do have it running or want too. Fear not. It's simming at a better level than we ever had.
If you log on, I'm using my real name John Brenner.
Cheers
Sf

You still have the login info for that XP box I was running rFactor Server on? Why don't you get on there & get it running/updated again?DANDY wrote:Never far!

Re: What's consuming your time today?
Its really a pleasure to meet SF and DANDY again - hi good old fellows!
hope your life is fine and balanced and you are open minded and motivated as usual
Calling RL alive is optimistic and basically a lie.
its starving and at times giving a fart. but the end is near.
It would be just nice to have some thread about where / how to meet any of you at some time.
i personally tried rFactor, got some licenses and its even running. but the virus did not yet spread to me.
so let me know how to turn it right - you could give a newbie some information and perform some virus spreading
if you let me (maybe even us if we were more than me joining in somewhere somehow) know what to do / where to meet / what i must have downloaded to celebrate some «rl at rf reunion» thingy or whatever.
As far as this topic is concerned:
I am still around for some simming, though preferring bad love these months...
i would join a tournament, if there were one (20FingerS?)
I am still with my wife - no divorce yet. Fun to have the kids, to see them grow and to smell
the influence one has on them. Amazing life.
Job has become really hard, as my position changed.
so much brain requested - maybe therefor the bad love addicion
anyway - was nice to read you again, specially my old fellow
See Flat. Hope you are fine,
were a pleasure to meet you in rf...
cheers,
alf
