2010 Camaro: SS update [26 Aug '10]
Hey again. Sorry it took so long to get the (body) model finished and a .car thrown together but, with school started it was a bit hard.
Important note: The model was mostly made by me. I had the help of TheWinner, and he finished the front and top of the model. He also made the UV map and skins.
Anyway, here's an alpha for you guys to try out. I only just made the wheels last night; I will keep working on those. The skins... I'm having trouble with the environment mapping setting. When it's on, the colors are too bright (yellow and red are especially bad) but the black skin is pretty good. When I turn it off, the black skin is too dark, and there is almost no detail, but the colored skins are good (well, sorta. There's still not much detail). Can alpha channels and such balance that out? It's not a huge issue for now, but I'd like to get it sorted before I release it to the ASW forum. There's two versions of the model in the plug so you don't have to do the work yourself.
Thanks to Tomte for helping me with many things physics-wise in the .car. I think it's a good start, but like he said, some things you just have to have experience with (which I obviously don't have). Feel free to tweak and suggest stuff.
(environment mapping turned off)
P.S. I just did some single player testing and I've come to the conclusion that the Camaro needs to understeer less and have better brakes. Do you guys agree?

Yes, I told you before, it's all about the alpha channels. Opaque/black in the alpha is 100% reflective; Transparent/White in the alpha is 0% reflective. I can help you with that if you need.Superslow wrote:I'm having trouble with the environment mapping setting. [...] Can alpha channels and such balance that out?
EDIT: Model looks very nice and the car file isn't too bad, but it steers like a supertanker and the brakes are useless, which may or may not be realistic. Also in the final product, you shouldn't have the body material set to double-sided, but that's ok for now. Keep working at it, it's coming along nicely.

Yes, help would be great, since I'm not able to create them myself.
What would you recommend I start tweaking to bring the handling up to scratch? From what I've read the car should only be a little less responsive than the Roush Mustang. Don't know much about the brakes, but I'll strengthen 'em up a bit.
The finished product should have at least a very basic interior, so that should solve the problem of the double-sided body material.
Re: 2010 Camaro: SS update [26 Aug '10]
The brake bias is quite extreme. I think the front brakes are probably engaging Redline ABS while the rear brakes are not doing anything. I found 8500/3000 improved matters. The turning behaviour is mostly due to the front lift of 0.12 - I think this is an awful lot in the Redline world. Remember gravity is not strong enough in Redline, so zero Redline lift actually means some positive lift compared to reality. I halved it to 0.06 and that got things under control. My approach is more pragmatic though, I'll leave it to the Redline scientists to comment further.

Here's a beta 2 for you all to try out. Not so much a graphics update, but I did turn off environment mapping, and do something to the model. Thank you Tomte for the help with the physics! I think it's much better. The brakes still might not be up to par, but I can keep tweaking that.
There are 2 versions in the download. One is the original, the other is the beta 2. Make sure you delete the old folder.

I really like the package now, it feels realistic (to me) and fun to drive. Alpha channels: once you've finalised your textures, PM me and I'll gladly help with that for the finishing touch.

New GT3 Beta!
OK, I've been working with Val to fix the GT3 Camaro. I have not gone with exactly what Val had, but it's pretty close. I'm not sure if it's still too fast. I've only done a couple MP races with more than 2 people, but those turned out well. Someone even said to release it as is.
Anyway, I think with how far out of balance the GT3s are right now, I shouldn't be worrying too much about lap times, and instead on the "feel" of the car. That is what I'd like feedback on atm. I know that the GT4 thing is going on right now (which, sadly, I won't be able to participate in), so the big, re-balance all GT3 cars will have to come later.
Hope you enjoy; here's the link (just pop it in the Plug-Ins folder, no replacing necessary):

P.S. The name is "GT3 Chevrolet Camaro v0.2"

Thanks for the car.Superslow wrote:

So the test car you distributed yesterday via PM isn't the actual one? (car file GT3_Camaro_SS_2010b2SSV.car)
Actual car now is then GT3_Camaro_SS_2010b2.car I guess - is it right?
Was is the difference between the SSV and non-SSV?

Yes, the .car I PMed you yesterday is now old. I changed the LSD from 100 to 150, to make it a little more tricky to drive. I can't remember if there was another change.
In other news, the SS .car is coming along. The brakes have been fixed, and it's not understeering out of every corner and into every tree...

Alrighty. Yes, controlling seems a bit harder but it's still fun.Superslow wrote:Tuktuk wrote:Thanks for the car.Superslow wrote:

2010 Camaro SS v0.3
OK, here's another update for y'all (beta 3). This is for the stock SS version. I've changed pretty much everything in the .car, and I hope it's more realistic feeling now. I've also changed the body and wheel models for more accurate ones. I'd like feedback on fps performance. The textures are only single-color atm. That will change fairly soon if everyone gets good fps.

It has now been nearly seven months since the last update of this car. I don't in anyway intend to be rude or pushy, but I was just wondering when, if ever, you intend to finish the textures. Also, since the last update Chevy has released a couple of different race car concepts which you may be interested in at least reading about.

I'd sure like to finish the textures, but with all that's going on (school, job, etc.) I just don't have the time for Redline anymore. I do have an unreleased version with a completely new model (body, wheels, interior). It's high poly, but it runs fine on my Mac. I also have a couple new sound files for the stock model, but I'm not convinced about those either. :/
I don't know if anyone wants to take over the project. I'm not sure the .car is all there (even though I've made some post-release tweaks), and there's just single color textures right now (no UV mapping). It might be easier to start from scratch, but I can upload the whole deal if anyone wants to give it a shot.
Re: 2010 Camaro: SS update [26 Aug '10]
Well, I'd be happy to finish the .car file, and I'd be willing to try the textures, but I'm kinda hopeless when its come to texturing/modeling so chances are I'd never get it done (just like the 2008 challenger I've already got). I can deal with the handling and engine sounds if you get a volunteer for the textures. Let me know.

Re: 2010 Camaro: SS update [26 Aug '10]
those rims are just spectacularly good!!! It's a shame you'll not be able to finish this car. Especially looking at GB links. Is a good competitor for the Mustang Rouge Stage...
Re: 2010 Camaro: SS update [26 Aug '10]
I'm somewhat surprised no one has volunteered to finish the modeling by now. Its a shame, since its one of those cars that RL could really use.
