I personally dont think strict is that bad - its just a variant and you have to adapt Wink

Anyway - saw the current versions in post 1 - thanks tomte.
they are available now on legacyoflies, the gt4testpack2 is no more available...

One more word: I have some evidence that the nissan will still beat the others as its the same speed but more forgiving. Will have to testdrive of course before its clear.

maybe some mp-races show any evidence...

cheers,
alf

GT4 - Redline Specifications - Page 6 Empty Re: GT4 - Redline Specifications

Post  alphonse Tue Aug 31, 2010 5:49 pm

Sorry for any delay.

This one took much longer than i thought.
For the short version, please read towards the end.

I tested all cars again, on Bardagi, Imola, Silverstone Arena, Watkins Glen - all in daylite: i did many laps in each car to get a really good lap in TimeTrial - and Thruxton in rain, in 1 race alone (only 4 laps - dont give this too much weight pls).

Overall feeling is very good. cars seem pretty even. the cadillac, the fat lady got faster, the weight can be felt at many moments though. The porsche gained a lot and can now compete with the others for me. maybe the caddy and porsche are even faster than the others..? On the other hand - if you can manage the M3 - its fast. The nissan still rolls like on rails and the Z4 is so nice to drive - but somehow tricky at times.
In general its pure fun to see that diverse characters of cars with a different handling, different gearing are anyway so close at the times. They will fit one racer more one less - "choose your cars gentlemen"?
The most amazing difference for me is the handling of the nissan compared to the cadillac. The weight, somehow the steering make them so different. Try them - one first then the other (try watkins, only the start till after the chicane). its really different. i like this outcome a lot!
The Results of the tests
At Bardagi
Caddi - BMW Z4 (+0.04) - Nissan (+0.06) - BMW M (+0.14) - Porsche (+0.18)
At Imola
Nissan - Porsche (+0.32) - BMW M (+0.48) - BMW Z (+0.60) - Caddi (+0.92)
At Arena
Caddi - Porsche (+0.52) - Nissan (+0.55) - BMW M (+0.76) - BMW Z4 (+0.87)
Watkins Glen
Caddi - BMW Z4 (+0.10) - BMW M (+0.32) - Nissan (+0.37) - Porsche (+0.65)
Thruxton (RAIN)
// the results of thruxton / rain are not really representative. i did a 4-lap race with each car
// and was happy with any time. no re-testing. All cars may be at same speed here.
// I would need simply more time to test this too thourougly - but i wont do it right now - sry.
Porsche - BMW M (+0.84) - BMW Z (+0.96) - Caddi (+0.99) - Nissan (+2.96)

In general
The cars are pretty even - i got some very lucky laps there - but only with one car at a time Wink
The Topspeed of the Nissan was cut off a lot - which is not bad on all tracks - as the handling is so different you gain the time at the next curves back (a good line and you exit faster then the rest).
TopSpeed measured in Thruxton (Rain)
BMW M, BMW Z4 and Cadillac at 224 km/h - Porsche and Nissan at 226 km/h.

I am happy with the result.
Tests show they are pretty even. But only to me.
Please let me know what you think is best.

For me, the time release of all cars a v1.0 is here.
I would just feel safer to have some more opinions, honestly, as to avoid the GT3-mistake.
But i cannot do more then testing them as good as i can. Should we open the discussion even?

I would like to thank Tomte and snail now - even if the discussion might go on - for the time-investment and your addition to a tournament that could just be a blast if it works out.

thanks a lot,
alf

Excellent work, Alphonse. I have the impression that you've put in more time and energy into the GT4 cars than I did... cheers And I like The outcome.

I would also like to hear from other people. Maybe I should put up an anonymous vote which car you prefer. If you don't all vote for the same car, we could say we're done.

I'm currently on vacation, no access to the Mac. If there are no more issues cropping up, I can begin wrapping up 1.0 of "my" GT4s next week.

Excellent.

Just to know about the schedule...

I am planning a qualification-timetrial for starting grid of race one.
We need final cars then aswell as paintjobs on them if possible / requested.

So i announce not on the asw-forums that the cars seem final and complaints shall be posted asap.

You ll let us know what is feasible on which car concerning skins.
Final release should be done the day before the tournament starts at least (nor more changes to physics).
of course, if a .car needs a respec and retest, this costs us some time - which might be worth it.

The plan was to start the tournament on Sept 19th, so timetrials from Sept 12.
Which means the website and rules must be upped asap too.

We can have 1-3 weeks delay though - i am in no hurry.

sounds reasonable?

What do you think about a renamed release of whatever track you use for time trials, given only to racers, so the HoF doesn't get cluttered with a bunch of other people's times? I can do so if one of my tracks is to be used..

Kenners

Generally yes. Once the physics are locked (and they seem to be), we will only add paint jobs.

As for the GT3 or TTC, can't remember now, we can lock the physics and the .car for the time trials and give the developers and skin artists another week to transmit racing liveries, which will be updated on the day of the first race. You will need one day anyway between the end of the time trials and the first race to sort out the groups, website and so on. We use this time to push out the last graphic updates.
The physics will stay locked until the end of the tournament.

Are there any other car developments going on? Last year we had word from NoNameBrand about a Mustang FR500C and possibly a C6? How about the Marcos? C14ru5 proposed the 3D models.

The Z4 has been in the garage today. She now has an improved UV map, lost a passenger seat and gained a roll cage. Also culled some polygons and sorted out the messed up materials that necessitated the entire body being double-sided, so performance should improve a little.

Tomte, how shall we do this - I send you the models or you send me the final car file?

Now that's what I call good news. Thanks a lot, DJ.

If you feel up to it, I leave the .car file and the plugin process in your capable hands.
The up to date .car is v0.2, I don't plan any more work on the handling or other setup. So you can simply use that one and add the appropriate credits for Andreu's work.
If you need a hand in packaging (given you're running SL) let me know.
If it is all right with you, the Z4 GT4 is now your baby.

If there are any questions, let me know.

Ok, I haven't heard otherwise from you guys, therefore the car's physics are set for the
BMW M Coupe
BMW Z4 M Coupe
Cadillac XLR
Porsche 968

I will release time trial enabled v1.0 (with placeholder paintjobs) of the BMW M Coupe and the Porsche 968 in the next day or two. Or three.
DonaemouS, do you want to release the Cadillac or am I supposed to do that? Twisted Evil
DJ will take care of the release of the BMW Z4 M Coupe

I'm running 10.6.4 on a MacMini. I had problems with Texture Compressor and Plugin Packer, but it works today. I don't remember changing anything.

I'm using standard 1024x1024 png files, created with the Gimp and digested by Graphic Converter to add the alpha channel.
I need to drag one png after the other onto Texture Compressor, several at once or a folder won't work.

Plugin Packer works as usual (as could be seen by the last series of betas), simply drag and drop.

I don't have any fancy additional graphic format encoders installed. I have QuickTimePro, though, which coexists with the 10.6 version of QuickTime. But I doubt that does a difference.

It's the drag and drop action - dropping files onto the TC or PP icons simply moves those files into the same folder as TC and PP. Sad

Okay - i need an update.

We lock physics now.
Could the developers release all 5 cars of version 0.9 for the timeTrial by the end of this week?
(Yes, thanks, builtin 1 or something so they register times).

Paint jobs will be available for the Porsche and the two BMW's - right?
Final cars (all paintjobs in) should be released on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18.
Is that possible?

If yes - we are good to go and the information on the tournament will be up asap.

I just need the confirmation of the dates and the lock of the physic.

Thanks a lot for all the work...

alf

Are the TC and PP Icons Aliases to the applications? If yes - no files should be moved imo...

It won't be plugged, but I can release a 0.9 folder with time trial enabled before Thursday. I'll be away from my Mac Friday to Monday.

TC and PP are carbon applications in the Tool Chest folder, no aliases. Drag and drop of a file/folder onto them should trigger the application, but in my Snowy the Finder interprets the action as me moving the file/folder into the Tool Chest folder. Unfortunately neither TC nor PP seem to accept file/folder paths typed from the terminal.

Now i understand.
Try to drag and drop on the application using command-alt (when dropping on the applications).
This should force the application to try it at least - and most probably with success...
