Re: Your key setup
You can assign the gear change up/down to any key on your keyboard, as you like it. There must be two keys that are right for you, out of the 50 or so available!JoeBagoDoNuts wrote:I simply cannot use manual on my laptop keyboard

NoNameBrand and Valentine,
Perfect, you both just precipitated the next question I had!
NoNameBrand,
Awesome description of your driving method, thank you!
I'd love to hear more of what other manual divers are using for their respective setups!

Re: Your key setup
Its the first time i do that here - but may we split this thread into "history" and "your key setup".
and - i have no idea how you guys can drive like this. tried it - have no chance, turn myself around...
for any keyboard when redlining (macbook pro, apple keyboard - what-you-can-think-of)
I got on the right hand:
arrow up: throttle
arrow left: left
arrow right: right
arrow down: break
pretty simple - right?
i shift with the other hand:
shift up: a
shift down: z (y on french or german keyboards though)
full throttle: shift on the left side
handbrake: space bar
in fact - i cant drive in another setup as i found out...

I'm the same way as Alphonse. The other setups you guys have are just weird.

Re: Your key setup
My layout mirrors what I do on a full keyboard, except there, the right hand keys move to the keypad - 0, enter, 4 & 8 (brake, gas, down, up). I never found using keys between the steering ones comfortable. I find WASD great for FPS games, but that's about it.

Poll: Your Keyboard Layout
Hi Folks,
I need some help here. I want to improve as a player in Redline.. I am a self described Redline "Addict", and I can clearly see that I've reached my limit in playing in Automatic transmission mode. Most of you folks know me as, well.. only playing turbo mode, in Auto Transmission mode. I've witnessed in my scant few sim games that I've had the privilege to join, that Auto does not work in sim, if I may put it so bluntly. (please correct me if I am wrong.)
(Now that I've mentioned sim and turbo in the same paragraph and in the same post, I just realized that I might be talking about two different topics, Aaaaaaaack!)
I really don't see auto being useful in sim mode, and... please correct me if I'm off base, I've watched some of you start in Turbo mode and then progress into the Sim world, of which, I do admit some envy, but I suspect that you have made the transition to manual. As mentioned in my thread, "History Of Redline" Post, my so-called, self-limitation to switch to manual is simply getting used to a a keyboard layout that works for me.
May I ask that you folks post your keyboard layout which works best for you?
Thank you!
Kind regards,
JoeBago

Re: Your key setup
Accelerate -- Up arrow
Brake -- Down arrow
Full Throttle -- Space bar
Handbrake -- Control
Left -- Left arrow
Right -- Right arrow
Gear up -- X
Gear down -- Z
Look behind -- Command key
I find using the Space bar for full throttle to be very relaxing on long straights.

Re: Your key setup
right hand
accelerate = up
brake = down
turn left = left
turn right = right
left hand
gear up = z
gear down = s
full throttle = left cmd
a = rear view
(so the 4 first fingers just fall naturally in place onto these keys with a french keyboard because these are the most used keys to drive)
x = honk
f = toggle lights
c = toggle view mode
space = handbrake (which I rarely use)
1 to 5 = taunts (that's why i often end up with the wrong taunt : 4 and 5 are too far from the a/z/s/cmd block)
I use this setup since the very beginning and have never been able to use another one
@ JoeBagoDoNuts : some sim drivers have been known to be pretty good in auto but you can not be the fastest in that mode. Manual rules, particularly with some cars in which auto gearing is not optimised.

Re: Your key setup
Oh, should i be the only one on earth, using the »original-zaphod-crossed-hands-technique«? On my extended keyboard i use my left hand for gas (middle finger | up arrow) and brake (pointer | down arrow). And my right hand for steering left (pointer | left arrow) and right (middle finger | right arrow).
Left hand ring finger does full throttle (shift key) and downshifting (enter). Left thumb for looking backwards (ctrl). Right hand ring finger is for upshift (Keypad zero). — Looks a little silly, but i got used to it...
