Need more memory
looking to fill the imac with some new memory ... any suggestions on brand quality and prices
Re: Need more memory
unfortunately, the "Mac" RAM are all the same. They are built on Apple specs and usually have all the same speed, differently by PC Market.
In Italy we sell Kingston as the best one, but they don't give any important speed in gaming nor in video intensive applications.
Usually, you should buy at pair, eliminating the made in somewhere in korea Apple original.

Re: Need more memory
I second Don.
Apples spec on their Website for your iMac shows you what exactly you need. I suggest either Kingston or Apple original RAM, but there might be differences to the US market. Searching online helps you save money, in switzerland it is often seen about factor 2...

Why pay twice the price for the same thing?alphonse wrote:Apple original RAM
I recommend Crucial Technology www.crucial.com - they were previously owned by Micron, who supplied much original Mac memory, now owned by Lexar. In my experience the prices are good, the service is excellent and the memory is very high quality. And they have a great wizard that tells you exactly what memory and how much you can put in your Mac - avoids all the RAM detective work.

As i mentioned - i don't know the market in the us. i am just a swiss guy. If crucial.com is good thats fantastic.
We had several problems with badly produced or poor specified ram some years ago. with original ram, you pay or payed the price to avoid this. Just for sure: compare the prices (even for original ram), its the best money-safer all around...

Re: Need more memory
In Italy the Mac's Crucial RAMs are not well distributed. I know they are good, but, I repeat, the Mac specific RAM are all the same. Good mean, you buy a pair of RAM, you install them, they work for years. Just this.
Poor RAM, you buy a pair, one is failed, you get the new one in warranty, the other one become failed...

Re: Need more memory
When I was in New York last November, I asked around in the local stores for a memory upgrade of my Mac Mini. The prices they game me were horrendous (300$ for 2GB of something).leoantix wrote:looking to fill the imac with some new memory ... any suggestions on brand quality and prices
I just ordered 2 GB at Other World Computing and had it delivered to my friends place. It was there after 2 days, 70$ incl. delivery. That might not have been the cheapest, but it was anyway way lower than street or European prices. And I think I got Kingston.

Re: Need more memory
thank you everyone for the suggestions ... time to do my homework on the internet now and find the best deal, thanx again
Re: Need more memory
I just go down to the local PC shop and get stuff of the right speed. (667MHz DDR2 SODIMMs for my MacBook)
They even have stuff that works in my G5. Screw the "special Mac spec" RAM and it's "special Mac" price.

Re: Need more memory
You still need to buy quality RAM. Nothing worst than wondering why the hell this and that is crashing.NoNameBrand wrote:They even have stuff that works in my G5. Screw the "special Mac spec" RAM and it's "special Mac" price.

Use memtest.
Just about everything from the store I go to has over-the-counter replacement warranties. Fantastic service.
