HoF development idea
Hi,
been thinking about improving the RL experience through improved time trials reporting. Since Legacyoflies is the meeting point for RL users, this would fit nicely under Legacyoflies' umbrella.
At current point the Ambrosia SW's Hall Of Fame has the just the basic functionality. Nothing else. I'd like to see a Hall Of Fame done properly, so that the users could actually benefit from the data.
Few improvement ideas:
- Car classification (compare the results on specific car class, say TCC car compare)
- Personal view (how do I compare in the results through different cars / tracks / group )
- Activity statistics (what is hot in RL)
etc.
What would be needed would be the access to the Ambrosia SW's Hall Of Frame database's data. The extra info needed (classification, more detailed versioning of tracks, cars) could be easily build upon that data. The new functionality could be easily be built using a suitable reporting system (we have one at http://mydbr.nocsos.com).
Of course if we would have a database set up, it would be easy to store all the other data to it as well (RRL results etc).
As said, this would need some co-operation with Ambrosia SW's (access to the data) and then setting up a system. The latter one should be quite straightforward. I would be willing put some effort on this one.
This would be needed:
1) Contact info from Ambrosia SW and their willingness grant access to HoF data. (Dunno what database they are using but MySQL would be a good guess.)
2) Set up the database to host the HoF data and additional information needed (support data like classes, tracks etc)
3) Putting up simple UI to handle the maintenance of the support data
4) Generate the needed web-pages to produce the reports needed from the data
- I can do 3 & 4 (if someone would help with 3 that would be great)
- Do any of you have any contacts in Ambrosia SW? We could ask if they would be interested to grant access to data (in best scenario use their database).
- If we cannot use Ambrosia SW's database, we would need to set our own db. No big deal, but it would require synchronization with current HoF database.

For the Time Trial League I dealt with Matt Slott (fprefect on the Ambrosia Board) on a couple of occasions. Here are two public examples: Topic 1 and Topic 2.
He is the one who maintains the HoF. As you can see in the 2nd example, it can be quite frustrating to even get a "I've read your email, but I don't have time right now" out of him.
I very much doubt that they will give direct access to the database (which I think is Microsoft SQL) to end users. I doubt even more if they are willing to spend any time on extending Redline.
But, something else first. Harpo, your proposal requires a database that must run on a webserver. Who will provide that service and will it be free?

Getting a hosted db & web server combo should not cost that much (if the traffic stays reasonable). Don't think that would be the problem. I can take care of that one.

Access to the data would be the biggest issue and would need co-operation with Ambrosia SW. I do understand that this would not bring money / food on their table, so they might not be that eager to allocate necessary time for this one (after all, RL is just a $25 game). I have been in contact with Matt concerning other product of theirs (SPX), so I can ask him if they have any interest of supporting this.

I am currently programming a Ranking and standings Software in Postgres / php for Redline (not too fancy, serves primarly as a proof of concept by now).
I of course need to have the Racer-name (in the future might be a unified ID), track name (and checksum and weather and mode...) and car name (and checksum...), a race (where was raced, hosted by whom), a race-series (RLRC, RRL, ...) and a ranking-system according to it (RRL, RLTC, Ladder-System in Elo-style).
The ranking will be calculated after a race was entered (by autenticated users currently) and available for publication.
This system can be extended to add the time-trials and other data to it. I was discussing this with some gents here and am pretty sure there is some development towards this direction - so i suggest you dont break glass right now and wait for some time to see what comes out.
The idea - of course - is a good one, even if its not new
In case you need Serverspace, i tend to direct you to leo - as lol is THE repository for all redline-stuff besides ambrosiasw - i like to have things centralized in a way so it does not fall apart.
If this does not work for some reason and you still need Serverspace - i can provide it for Redline-related stuff - for free

OK, sounds good (other than the Postgres that is ).
Looking forward for the results.
