[WIP] Wiimote
As you might already know, I have started modeling a Wii remote. It is coming along very nicely:
I am following Gile's tutorial and I'm at the part where he is modeling the headlights of the Mini. I did the same thing he did, but following the contours of the buttons on the remote instead of headlights. It seems to be working, but then this came up:
Should I worry about this? I have no idea why it's a different color. When I go into face mode I can't select just the D-pad. It selects the faces above and under the D-pad. It doesn't seem to be doing anything to the model itself...
Also, does the model look sufficient for now? It would be good to fix any other problems before continuing I think.

Re: [WIP] Wiimote
Have you made the appropriate edges hard?
Select an edge, right click, select 'hardness', then 'hard'.
As a general rule, make edges that border faces at sharp angles hard (if you want round edges, add more polys!)
The other thing is that wings renders the smoothed image much better if everything has been triangulated.

I have made all of the edges around the buttons hard. Maybe it was the way I tweaked the vertices?
Wait, what?

Re: [WIP] Wiimote
I don't know if this is the problem here, but sometimes if you delete faces that are oddly shaped (like having more than 4 edges), Wings creates a new face that overlaps the old one. This is particularly common if you use extrude with more than one face simultaneously. (Never use the 'extrude' command with more than one face simultaneously in Wings, it creates hidden faces.) Luckily, it doesn't look like you've done that here. However, you will recognize the problem if you are unable to connect two vertices when trying to create the blue edges in the picture above. If so, try to delete surrounding faces (Select -> Adjacent -> Faces will come in handy) and reconnect the vertices.
Are you still using a virtual mirror? I guess you are, since you're at the "headlights" part of Giles' tutorial. If so, there's no wonder why you have the black faces you can't select. Reason: You've deleted the edge that divides the two separate symmetrical halves for these faces, which confuses the virtual mirror. I don't have a solution ready for you, since it depends very much on how the new broken faces and their surroundings behave when selected. You can of course try to reconnect the vertices along the split-half edge. If that doesn't work, freeze the mirror and try reconnecting the same vertices again.

"Never" is perhaps a bit strong, but in most cases "Extrude Region" is what you really want.

Just destroy the mirror, and sort out the half you've got, and then put the mirror back on.
