WIP - Scion xB
I've recently started making a 2006 Scion xB. I will actually model this, but I'm going to need some help. I've downloaded aegidian's tutorial and have been progressing nicely until I came upon a few things that I'm not sure what to do about:
For some reason I can only select two edges, not three like aegidian said in the tutorial. I made the virtual mirror, but mine doesn't look like the picture... (sorry, can't get the image to show. Click the link )
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/forums/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=2803
Anyone know why this is?
Second, Giles says pyramids when he refers to the geometry window. I have cubes
Third, I don't have blueprints for the whole car. I used actual photos (although they are at the right angle) for the side and back, with real blueprints for the front and top. Will this be a problem?

sometimes Wings doesn't show all highlightes edges if you use the mirror AND wireframe view (instead of 'full' body view or however it's called. The view you switch with "w"). You can check if both the left and right edge are selected by moving the one which is highlighted. If the other edge moves we well, both (they are actually the same) are selected.
As for the views, if you have front and top and some good photos from the side and back you should be fine. The car is reasonably square to help you here.

Re: WIP - Scion xB
Thanks for clearing that up Tomte.
Unfortunately, I'm stuck again.
Eh, where do I move the edges? Whenever I select the horizontal edges, right-click, move -> Y, the whole thing moves up and down.

Now I can make the rough shape. I'll do this by moving edges round to match positions on the image of the mini in the image-plane.
To start I'll enter edge mode and select the edges at the front I want and move them using right-click Move -> Y.

Then I'll do the same at the rear. Resetting to a normal view this gives me:

I didn't have anything but a side view of the wrong car when I made the Z06. For the 350Z (should finish that) I had plans from all sides. For the Mustang, I had a high-poly model to trace.
Proof's in the pudding.
I also knew a lot more about Wings as I progressed, so I should really return to the Z06 some weekend.

Well, that is what the y-axis represents - up and down.
If you want to move the edge in two dimensions at once, look at it from x, y, or z (hit those keys - X, Y, Z (shift-x, etc) will get you the opposite view), and then hit move->free, and it'll move in the plane that you're looking at (ie, in the y-z plane when looking from x).
Re: WIP - Scion xB
I've had a problem saving my model. I can get the reference images scaled properly:
but whenever I save, quit, and start up Wings again, this happens:
The dimensions of both images in Wings are exactly the same. It's just that Wings seems to crop the image.
How do I fix this?
Thanks,
Ss

I've been using Wings 0.99.03, and I've seen that texture scaling problem whenever I use the "Revert" function from the file menu. Is it so that the dimensions of the image plane are the same, but the texture has zoomed out of its boundaries? I have no idea what causes it.

Re: WIP - Scion xB
Ok, I had the same problem for a while now. I work around this by UV-mapping the image plane and then assigning the blueprint/photo to this texture.Superslow wrote:I've had a problem saving my model. I can get the reference images scaled properly:

I know that this is isn't straight forward and possibly only works for one of the surfaces (left or right, front or rear).
No idea if you know about UV mapping, but it's described in Giles' tutorial.
Ok, let me see:
- add image plane, select image/blueprint (you've done that already)
- in face select mode, highlight the image plane, then right/control click and select UV-mapping (new window opens inside Wings, called AutoUV: a red square on a presumably a black background)
- the AutoUV window is where you shape the UV map. The red square you are seeing is the selected face. Inside the AutoUV-window you can now move the face around, scale it, turn it and so on. Important for you: simply right click/scale/max horizontal and again right click/scale/max vertical
- right click/create texture/size 1024x1024 (size doesn't matter as long as it's larger than the source photo I guess). Render options not important here. Click OK. Close AutoUV window
- now, if you deselect the image plane, the blueprint should be gone, but don't dither! On the right side in the Wings window you find a box called Outliner. There you should see your materials like '_hole_' and 'default' and 'image' and another thing with a small chessboard patterned symbol on it (2x2 chessboard... well). Right click/refresh. The blueprint should now reappear and stay for good.

Re: WIP - Scion xB
I've run into some problems with the Scion due to my modeling inexperience, so I have decided to take a break from making the xB. I am planning to make something much simpler, such as a Wii remote:
I've chosen this because I own a Wii, so I will have a real model to look at. I also plan on taking my own pictures, but we'll see how that works out.
If I think I'm getting the hang of it I might even try to model the remote in multiple programs, just for grins.
